Sadler keen to attack last eight games after frustrating Colchester draw

18 March 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler was frustrated his team didn’t come away with three points away at Colchester United but insists the Saddlers are in a good position to really attack the final eight games of the season and is fully focused on the next task.

Taylor Allen’s first half strike was cancelled out by Cameron McGeehan just three minutes into the second half before Jackson Smith saved Noah Chilvers’ penalty at the Jobserve Community Stadium.

Sadler admitted his team should have been more clinical on the day but with the Saddlers sat in eighth position, just a point behind the play-off places, attention is solely on improving over the next couple of weeks before the next outing on Good Friday against MK Dons.

“We’re in a position with eight games to go where we can give absolutely everything,” Sadler said.

“It has to always be about the next game and we’re looking forward to the challenge of the final weeks of the season, we really are, and the young group we have are desperate to show that and how far we’ve come.

“I thought Taylor Allen was unbelievable, I thought he was a credit to himself. I thought the back three/back five played well and we just needed to be a bit more clinical to get that second goal against a team who clearly went really big, experienced, robust and they banged it towards us and I thought we dealt with most of it, we just had that momentary lapse that caused them to score a goal.

“I’m frustrated we haven’t won the game, but heartened by how good I think as a team we are.”

Striker Mo Faal was withdrawn and replaced by Douglas James-Taylor during the second half and was also forced off during the midweek clash with Barrow.

Sadler explained the reason behind Faal’s substitution.

“Mo is fasting for Ramadan and we completely support him in that,” he commented.

“As a young player, he is still finding the best way of getting himself ready to be able to play a full 90 minutes so that was why Mo came off.

“These next two weeks will help him find that rhythm of being prepared to play a full game but of course, we support him in doing that.”
