Pre-match: Tom Knowles keen to give travelling fans a strong performance

26 April 2024

Walsall midfielder Tom Knowles is eager for Saturday’s game as the Saddlers still have a chance of making the play-offs.

Knowles is fully focused on the game against AFC Wimbledon and is hoping to come away with all three points regardless of results elsewhere.

“We’ve left ourselves with an opportunity so we’ve just got to control what we can control and that’s to win our game and hope results go our way, but if not, so be it, we dust ourselves down and look at the progress we have made this season,” Knowles said.

“The supporters are going to come down in their numbers as well, so we don’t just want that to be just a token journey for the end of the season, we want them to enjoy their day out, give them three points to cheer about.

“We can only go and win the game which is what we are going to go there, aim to do and hope we are in a good position.”

With Knowles joining the Saddlers ahead of the 2022/23 season, he has seen how the squad has progressed over the course of this season.

“League table, points and goals, that’s one thing to say but the atmosphere within the dressing room, it’s such a positive group of lads,” Knowles discussed.

“No matter through the highs or lows we’ve always stayed level-headed and tried to bounce back if it’s been a low and keep riding the wave when it’s been a high.

“The lads here have really bought into the culture, the positivity around the club and I feel like the majority of the time that has relayed onto the pitch and that’s why we’ve been enjoying our football.”

With the season coming to an end, Knowles has had time to reflect on how the season has panned out for him individually.

“Starting off the season injured wasn’t the best start and then amongst that obviously learning a new position, and trying to nail down and make sure I’m the best I can be in that position probably led to a little inconsistency before Christmas,” Knowles explained.

“But after that, myself and as a team, I feel like we’ve kicked on after Christmas and then unfortunately I picked up the injury away to Forest Green which for me couldn’t happen at a worse time.

“It’s been tough for me to get back in which is exactly how it should be. The season as a whole has not gone as planned but that’s football, you have to improvise and adapt and keep on going and keep on smiling.”
