Pre-match: Sadler focused on ending season with good performance

26 April 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is looking forward to final game of the season away to AFC Wimbledon still with everything to play for.

Although results elsewhere will need to fall the Saddlers’ way, Sadler is hopeful if Walsall do their job, then they will have a chance to grab that final play-off spot in League Two but he is keen to finish the season with a victory nonetheless.

“I think what’s important for us is that we want to finish the season strongly, put in a good performance and continue to build on what’s been a good season, a progressive season,” Sadler said.

“We want to finish it off really well, that’s just the most important thing. All the other stuff, all the subplots, we just want to go there and put a good performance in and win the game.”

Most importantly for Sadler, he feels that it is important to put in a good performance on the final day for the staff and fans who have put so much into the season for the Saddlers.

“We want to put in a performance. All the people that are going to travel down to the game, we want to say thanks to them for the season’s work that they’ve put in and the support that they’ve given us throughout all of it,” Sadler discussed.

“We’ve built a squad that where the vast majority will be with us next season as well and we want to continue that progress that we are making there and this is the next part of that, it’s all about our mentality and how we approach the game.

“We will be challenging the lads to put in a performance, challenging the lads to continue our forward momentum and as I say, and we will see what happens from there.”

Over 1,000 Saddlers fans will be making the trip down to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday which is a staggering amount of support on the final day. Sadler is astonished by the level of support and hopes it will translate onto success on the pitch.

“That’s unbelievable. Another 1,000 plus supporters travelling for an away game is absolutely incredible, I can’t stress enough how amazing they have been with us this season,” Sadler explained.

“We want to give them a team to be proud of, we want to continue to bring the whole football club together and seeing support like that again shows me that we are on the right path.

“That’s incredible support again and another motivation. You talk about motivation in the previous game, a huge motivation is wanting to send all those guys home happy and again that’s the aim.”
