Liam Gordon determined to bounce back from Bradford defeat on final day

23 April 2024

Walsall defender Liam Gordon is hoping to right the wrongs from Saturday’s defeat and end the season on a positive note at AFC Wimbledon this coming weekend.

Results elsewhere on Tuesday evening will dictate whether the Saddlers head into the final match of the Sky Bet League Two season with a chance of making the play-offs.

Whatever Walsall’s fate is, Gordon feels the team have put good building blocks in place this season and the 24-year-old is hoping to reward the outstanding support the players have had from the fans by ending this season with at least a victory on Saturday.

“Regardless of how things go, we’re still going to bounce back and we want to finish the season on a positive, carry it into next season and give something for the fans to cheer and be positive about for next season because they’ve been unbelievable all season,” he said.

“We want to do it for them as much as we want to do it for ourselves.

“They’ve been unbelievable. If we got into the play-offs, no one wants to come and play us at home because of them.

“We’ve been 1-0 down or 1-1 and they’ve spurred us on, got us going and they’re everything that we need to keep us going and hopefully we can make it right on Saturday and next season they’ve hopefully got something to look forward to because they can see with the group that we’ve got and what we’re building to is something special."

It was a frustrating afternoon last time out against Bradford City as the Saddlers saw a two-goal lead evaporate.

While it was a tough defeat to take, Gordon believes that the team will be stronger in the future having been through that experience.

“All the staff, the gaffer, Daz (Darren Byfield), Gaz (Gary Waddock) and Watto (Dan Watson) all said that you have to go through these hard and dark moments to then reflect on when you are on the winning side of things,” he explained.

“We are going to bounce back from it whether that be next Saturday or come next season, we’re going to look at these times and it’s going to push us and make us stronger.”
