Pre-match: Jamille Matt aiming for winning return to Forest Green

8 March 2024

Walsall forward Jamille Matt is looking forward to Saturday when the Saddlers will face his former club, Forest Green Rovers.

Matt had two successful years for Saturday’s opponents but is eager to face them in a Walsall shirt at the unorthodox Bolt New Lawn stadium, in the hunt for all three points.

“It will be strange going back for the first time, but I will be going back as a Walsall player looking to try and get the three points,” Matt said.

“It can be unpredictable at times with the weather and stuff like that but for the most part they normally try and have a decent pitch. It’s a bit of a tighter pitch but I enjoyed my time playing there.

“I didn’t really have any complaints with that. You can make excuses, or you can look at factors, but I think we have just got to go there ready to do what we do and play how we know we can play.”

With the Saddlers sitting in an impressive seventh place, Matt believes it is important that the team do not get carried away and instead take the schedule game by game.

“It’s easy to get carried away but the boys have all been saying it and we’ve all been banging on about it - It’s that same boring thing, one game at a time,” Matt explained.

“That’s what got us to having these recent results and it’s something we want to carry on. Forest Green is going to be a tough game on Saturday, their position in the league is obviously something they won’t be happy about.

“Looking at them we know what their strengths are, which we will give them the respect they deserve but as usual, we need to focus on ourselves and look at what our strengths are and try to impose them onto our opposition.”

With recent results going the Walsall’s way, Matt feels part of that success is down to the dedication of the fans who will once again be filling out the away allocation on Saturday.

“They’ve been massive in the past and they will be massive again. They have been massive on this run we’ve been on and to hear the allocation has been sold out and they’ve been getting more tickets is fantastic,” Matt discussed.

“When you are there as a player on the pitch and you hear the support, it goes a long way. If you look back at the last away game and the scenes we had there, hopefully if we can play to the best of our abilities, we can recreate some of those scenes.”
