Jackson Smith: "The belief is there"

19 March 2024

Walsall goalkeeper Jackson Smith insists the team remain confident and are focused on pushing hard in the final eight games of the season.

After a fantastic five game winning streak, the Saddlers have drawn two and lost one of their last three matches but are still within touching distance of the play-offs, just a place and a point behind.

Smith remains full of belief that the squad can still fulfil their ambitions for the campaign given there is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season.

“The belief is there,” Smith said.

“The processes are there; we’re working hard and making sure we do the right things.

“It’s pointless focusing on anyone around us, we can’t control that so we’re making sure we’re doing what we can control.

“There are a lot of points still to play for, there is a long time to go in the season, we’re amongst it and it’s a good place to be come the back end of the season so the belief is still there and we’ll keep pushing to get to where we want to get to.”

Smith has enjoyed a run of nine consecutive starts and he played his part as Walsall walked away with a point from Colchester United on Saturday, saving Noah Chilvers’ penalty to keep the score at 1-1.

The Saddlers stopper was pleased to have kept the penalty out and credited the work of Goalkeeper Coach Dan Watson and Analyst Lewis Needham in helping him prepare for the situation.

“Every time we come into a game, we watch the penalty takers and where we think they’re going to go,” Smith explained.

“Credit to Watto and Lewis, they put the work in constantly to give me as much information as I can possibly have when I go out there and (on Saturday) it paid off.

“We talk and watch through what we think they’re going to do and then come to a collective decision and it’s paid off so credit to the pair of them.

“We’ve had a few in the last few weeks so it was nice to be on the right side of one and make the save.”
