Sadler proud of his side following Barrow draw

13 March 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler was very proud of his side as they drew 1-1 against a promotion chasing Barrow side.

Sadler singled out the effort his players put in during the 90 minutes but could not hide his disappointment at not managing to take all three points at home.

“I thought the effort the lads put in was unbelievable. They put in so much effort and we can’t fail but feel disappointed that we didn’t win the game,” he said.

“I am so proud of the work everyone put in here. We were walking and wounded towards the end as you saw with Joe and Mo shattered.

“I though the determination, desire, togetherness and willingness to try and get the goal and stay in the game at times in the second half when they had a spell was incredible.”

Sadler made three changes to the Saddlers starting lineup from Saturday’s game including a late call up for Rollin Menayese who managed to get on the scoresheet, making him the 22nd different goal scorer for Walsall this season.

“It goes to show what the togetherness is in my opinion. Your right, Taylor Allen, fantastic delivery, and Rollin, I’m so proud for him,” Sadler explained.

“I’m gutted for him that his goal is not to a winning one, I really am gutted because that is a long time (from his last start) and he’s had a really bad injury which has taken a long time to come back from.

“Clearly with the defensive issues we have had recently, it was the right thing to do to call him back and I’m proud of him for the work he has done to get himself back. I am so pleased for him that he is reestablishing himself in his career.”

With another stellar turnout by the Saddlers fans on Tuesday night, Sadler feels the Poundland Bescot Stadium’s atmosphere will have an important part to play in the remainder of the season.

“This place can be a real fortress, it really can. It’s been that for us and we look forward to playing at home,” Sadler discussed.

“With the situation I’ve just spoken about, with the injuries and all of that, the group has played their part. The supporters played their part massively as well, giving us that energy, drive, desire and willing us on.

“Everyone is playing their part. A point as much as we wanted three, we respect it, and we move onto the next game.”
