Pre-match: Sadler determined to reward large following of Saddlers fans at Forest Green

8 March 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is determined to give the large following of Saddlers fans heading to Forest Green Rovers a good result but is fully aware of the difficult task that awaits.

Sadler’s men head to Gloucestershire on a six-match unbeaten run, winning all of their last five but will take on a Rovers side who have improved since Steve Cotterill’s arrival at the end of January.

The Walsall Head Coach is looking forward to playing within what is expected to be a great atmosphere at The Bolt New Lawn and taking on Cotterill’s side.

“Steve’s an incredibly experienced manager who knows exactly what to do,” Sadler said.

“Most recently at Shrewsbury he did a fantastic job and over the years with the Bristol City team he had.

“He’s a fantastic manager and had a great career managing, he’s an experienced guy and it’s no surprise whatsoever that there has been an upturn in results since he’s come in, coupled with the fact that they’ve got good players so we know the challenge at hand, it will be a really tough game.

“We are buoyed by the number of supporters we’ve got going. We’ve spoke about it a few times, more or less every week but the support we’ve had and continue to have will be really powerful for us and seeing another 1000+ supporters going down the motorway on a Saturday afternoon to celebrate us will hopefully drive the team on, give us that energy and we’re doing everything we possibly can to give them a good day.

“We know the task at hand, we know the challenge it will be. It will be an incredibly hard game and it will be all about the hard work we put in but we look forward to the challenge.”

For the first time since the back end of January, the Saddlers had a week without a scheduled midweek fixture.

Sadler felt it was a good opportunity for the players to recharged their batteries and is pleased with how the time has been utilised after such a long time without a free week.

“It feels like a while,” Sadler admitted.

“We’ve been Saturday-Tuesday for some time, which has been great, no complaints on it but it was certainly good to have that bit of a rest, which we did Sunday and Monday and came back into on Tuesday all firing again.

“The enthusiasm from the group was exactly what I come to expect, there was some real hard work and good detail done.

“There’s another Saturday-Tuesday to look forward to so we had to use it wisely and we certainly did. We look forward to the games again.”
