Okagbue enjoying role in heart of defence

5 April 2024

Walsall defender David Okagbue is enjoying his role in the middle of the back three and is playing with a good level of confidence.

The 20-year-old has played 30 times for the Saddlers this season in what’s been a fruitful loan from Championship side Stoke City.

Okagbue has featured all across the back five at points this season but admitted he is enjoying the role at the heart of the back three.

“I feel more comfortable there and have more control over everything,” Okagbue explained.

“I can see the whole pitch, can cover in behind the two outside centre backs so it’s really good.

“I’m playing with a lot of confidence at the minute so it’s maybe down to that, playing in the middle but I’m really happy with how it’s going.”

The Saddlers take on 17th place Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

Okagbue insists Tranmere are not to be taken lightly despite their league position and is expecting a battle to come away with three points.

“Going away from home anywhere is difficult,” he said.

“I know they’re down there in the table but you can never underestimate teams in this league and away from home we’ve got to go, we’ve got to fight, get together again and get another three points, that’s the plan.”

The Saddlers will be backed by another fantastic away following on Saturday and the Irishman has felt the great support all season and is keen to reward them.

“They’re brilliant,” he commented.

“They come in their numbers, they show good support, they sing songs and they’re really good. When you’re on the pitch and it’s not going too well and you hear them sing, you think right, they’ve travelled to come and see us so we need to put in a good performance for them.”
