Walsall Women fall to narrow defeat to league leaders Shifnal

12 April 2023

Walsall Women fell to a narrow defeat against league leaders Shifnal Town Ladies despite a spirited performance.

A very fast paced first half saw Walsall take an early lead through striker Maicie Goulding.

The lead didn’t last long though as Shifnal responded well to equalise.

A change of formation saw the Saddlers make several breaks after going to a back three with wing backs providing space out wide against Shifnal’s attacking formation.

The game was finely poised as the two teams went into the half time break level.

It was Shifnal who got their noses in front in the second half via a penalty.

The Saddlers thought they should have had a penalty of their own but the referee waved away the appeals.

Walsall were made to defend against Shifnal’s potent attack but they worked incredibly hard and put their bodies on the line in the second half but couldn’t find an equaliser and the league leaders claimed all three points.

It was a drastic improvement from the previous meeting with Shifnal which ended in a 4-0 defeat.

Walsall Women now turn their attention to the cup with a trip to Knowle on Sunday 16th April.

A reminder that the team will be playing at the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday 22nd April against Port Vale Women at 6pm, after the men’s first team play Salford City.
