Mat Sadler looking forward to Stockport County test

12 January 2024

Saddlers Head Coach Mat Sadler is looking forward to this weekend’s League Two fixture against league leaders Stockport County and he has highlighted it as another opportunity for his side to put their stamp on things.

Heading into the game, Sadler’s men have won five of their last six games in the league, including an emphatic 6-1 win against Grimsby Town on New Year’s Day at Blundell Park.

Whilst recognising that Stockport are top of the league for a reason, the Head Coach is certain his side are looking forward to the next challenge which awaits them.

“Stockport are a very good team, they are top of the league for a reason,” began Sadler.

“They have got a fantastic squad and a really experienced manager who is doing what they do with the squad that they have got, it has been really impressive stuff.

“We go there looking forward to the next challenge and looking forward to coming up against a good team and looking forward to showing what we are all about and that is what it always is, it is about us.

“It is another good opportunity to put our stamp on things, it is another good opportunity to play in front of what I am sure will be another fantastic away crowd with our supporters doing what they have always done all season and that is back us and follow us.”

One player who unfortunately won’t be available for selection for the remainder of the 2023/24 season is Oisin McEntee after the versatile 23-year-old underwent surgery on his hamstring earlier this week.

“We won’t see Oisin until next season,” Sadler continued.

“I said this to him and I have said it to everyone else, this is an opportunity for him to work on everything else strength wise and the physical side of his game as well which possibly when you are playing week in, week out, you can’t do that.

“We are all gutted that Oisin has had to have surgery because as players and staff, we don’t want to see that with anyone.

“It is now one of those times where he has to fully focus on the recovery part of it but he will do that in a place where everyone is behind him and we look forward to seeing him back in the building in a few days time.

“The operation was the first step for him and now it’s the hard work for him to improve himself physically in this time.”
