Match Report: Doncaster Rovers 2-0 Walsall

9 April 2024

The Saddlers tasted defeat on the road as goals from Joe Ironside and Hakeeb Adelakun saw Doncaster claim three points at the Eco-Power Stadium.

There was one change to the side that started the 1-3 win at Tranmere on Saturday as Jackson Smith was missing from the squad and in turn replaced by Owen Evans, with George Barrett taking a place amongst the substitutes.

It was a fast start from the Saddlers and they recorded the first opportunity of the game within two minutes. A ball over the top of the Rovers defence from Taylor Allen saw Richard Wood unable to get a head onto it and it bounced over the defender into the path of Jamille Matt who let the ball bounce before striking from outside the box with a fierce drive but his effort was parried away by Thimothee Lo-Tutala for a corner.

The resulting corner saw a goalmouth scramble in the box as the ball hit the underside of the bar and despite the best efforts of Matt and co, the hosts were eventually able to clear the ball away from danger.

The hosts hasd their first opportunity on 18 minutes as Ironside picked the ball up with his back to goal and managed to turn in space and strike on his favoured left foot but his effort from outside the area fizzed wide.

The Saddlers were having the better of clear-cut opportunities and on 26 minutes Isaac Hutchinson did well to fins some space and cut inside onto his left and evaded challenges from the Doncaster men before drilling an effort at goal but it sailed just past the post.

On 35 minutes, Liam Gordon and Ryan Stirk combined well as the midfielder played the ball behind Jamie Sterry at right-back into space and Gordon picked the ball up and whilst he assessed his options in the box his cross turned shot from a tight angle fired wide of the mark.

Then on 39 minutes, against the run of play, Doncaster took the lead. Adelakun sent Luke Molyneux racing away down the left and he powered the ball into the middle of the box where Ironside was able to get infront of his man and fire into the back of the net.

Into the second half and Sadler made an alteration as Mo Faal was introduced in place of Matt against his former club in a bid to get back in the game.

The second half was a back and forth battle as both sides huffed and puffed but couldn't quite find that cutting edge. On 61 minutes, there was some play between Adelakun and Ironside and the hosts' goalscorer received the ball on the right-hand side and he took aim from a tight angle but the best he could achieve was the side netting.

Shortly after this Sadler turned to his bench once again as Joe Foulkes was replaced by another attacking option in Danny Johnson.

The hosts almost grabbed a second goal on 69 minutes as substitute Harrison Biggins played a dangerous through ball into the path of Molyneux but his effort was deflected out for a corner. From the corner, both Wood and Joseph Olowu both had efforts from close range but both were cleared off the line.

Another change came from the Saddlers bench shortly after as Josh Gordon was replaced by Douglas James-Taylor but on 76 minutes Doncaster managed to grab a second goal. Sterry pumped a high ball into the box which bounced on its way and Adelakun rose above the on-rushing defenders and Evans to loop his header over him and into the back of the net.

As the game reached its conclusion, Ross Tierney was introduced in place of Stirk and he played his part in what turned out to be a tense finale for the hosts. After Tierney won a free-kick just outside the box on the left-hand side, Hutchinson took responsibility and sent a dangerous delivery into the box which went through Lo-Tutala's hands and into the back of the net to restore some late hope for the Saddlers.

It wasn't to be however as the hosts saw the game out and claimed a valuable three points in Sky Bet League Two.
