Mat Sadler left feeling frustrated following narrow defeat to Doncaster Rovers

10 April 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler was left frustrated with the 2-1 defeat to Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night after a pleasing performance.

Sadler felt his side should have made a solid first half performance count but felt the final third ball just wasn’t dropping in the right position.

“I thought in the first half we were really good, really good. We got into some very good positions, and then on the night that final bit, the execution wasn’t there to then take our chance when it came,” Sadler said.

“It looked like we scored with the first corner of the game, there are fine bits that just didn’t quite go our way today, but I thought we got into some really good positions and controlled the game, certainly for the first half.

“It’s frustrating for us that we were on top, and we then give them something to go on with and then the second goal again, one that we would like to avoid defensively.”

Although a defeat is never easy to take, Sadler was pleased by his team’s mentality throughout and felt that was rewarded with a late goal by Isaac Hutchinson.

“The goal affected us a little bit in the second half. We didn’t quite get ourselves going in the same way but again credit to them (the players) they kept going, kept trying and obviously scored at the end,” Sadler discussed.

“I think it was there for all to see, frustrated with the two goals we conceded and that’s the thing we have to learn from these moments, and you have to be ready for the next time it happens.”

Sadler was quick to point out the impressive number of Saddlers fans who turned out on Tuesday night once again and was thankful for their support throughout the season.

“There have been loads of games and to keep coming out, keep spending the money, keep giving us that support, it’s incredible what they do for us,” Sadler explained.

“It’s just a shame from that perspective that we didn’t give them the result that we wanted. We now go into the upcoming weeks games and look forward to Saturday’s game with everything to play for.”
