Pre-match: Hutchinson calls for strong start from the Saddlers

13 October 2023

Walsall midfielder Isaac Hutchinson has been enjoying this season so far but believes he and his teammates must start strong in the game against Gillingham on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has made 12 league appearances so far this term and already has three goals and an assist to his name in all competitions this campaign.

The midfielder has called on the team to maintain their focus tomorrow feels starting strongly and building momentum will be key.

“For the most part we have started pretty well, first five-10 minutes we look lively but I think it is then maintaining that for the rest of the half and keeping our foot on the gas,” he explained.

“I think we probably just need to stay focused for the whole half, it is a concentration thing, a mindset thing, and a confidence thing.

“We either need to get that first goal and if we don’t, we need to make sure we stay on top.”

Gillingham currently sit third in the table, but Hutchinson still believes Walsall can get the better of them if they play with confidence.

“We’ve proved it time and again against teams higher than us in the table that we will always match them at least or be better than them,” he said.

“That’s never in doubt and that’s why I say the confidence should be there and we should be more confident going into games saying we are going to dominate it and be the team to make a mark on the game first.

“This is rather than waiting to see what the other team will do which will then put us on the back foot and then you are starting from behind.

“We have to use that confidence from the first whistle and take it into the rest of the game.”

With this game taking place at the Poundland Bescot stadium, Hutchinson believes Walsall’s recent home record can aid them when facing tough teams such as Gillingham on Saturday afternoon.

“We have good form at home, and we know that we can get on top of teams at home, so I think we have to have that intention from the first whistle to make our mark on the game, try and win the game,” Hutchinson commented.

“That has got to be the aim throughout, and we have to make sure after the little spells when we are out of the game, because there will be them, that we can bounce back and get back on top.”
