Match Report: Walsall 1-1 Forest Green Rovers (2-4 pens)

10 October 2023

Walsall came from behind to pick up a point against Forest Green Rovers in the EFL Trophy.

Tyrese Omotoye opened the scoring before Isaac Hutchinson levelled the match as the teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes.

Rovers won the subsequent penalty shootout to claim the extra point but the single point keeps the Saddlers' hopes of qualifying alive heading into the final group game against Shrewsbury Town.

Mat Sadler made seven changes from the team that started against Sutton United at the weekend.

Jackson Smith, Isaac Hutchinson, Douglas James-Taylor, Joe Foulkes, Ross Tierney, Harvey Griffiths and Taylor Allen, back available after suspension, all came into the team.

There were also welcomed returns on the bench for Brandon Comley and long term absentee, Rollin Menayese while academy players Dylan Thomas and George Barrett, recalled from his loan with Paget Rangers, were also named as substitutes.

Both teams had early chances as Callum Morton had an effort blocked on the line by Joe Foulkes before Ross Tierney’s shot was saved by Jamie Searle down the other end.

Rovers had a great chance to take the lead on 19 minutes when Teddy Jenks reached the by-line and cut the ball back to Morton who had the goal at his mercy but he blazed his shot wide from close range.

The Saddlers had the last opportunity when Isaac Hutchinson swept in a shot from distance but his effort was pushed away by Searle and the two teams went in level at the interval.

Rovers started the second half well and opened the scoring on 51 minutes when Jenks’ cross was met by Omotoye who applied the finish from close range.

The visitors almost doubled their lead four minutes later on the counter attack when Marcel Lavinier burst forward and slipped the ball across to Matty Stevens who was one-on-one with Smith but the Saddlers stopper did well to close him down and make the save.

Walsall were presented with a glorious opportunity to draw level on 58 minutes when Tom Knowles was tripped by Reece Welch in the area and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Up stepped Tierney but his spot kick was saved by Searle who guessed the right way.

Sadler turned to his bench five minutes later as Danny Johnson and the returning Comley replaced Tierney and Griffiths.

The equaliser came on 67 minutes when Knowles and Johnson linked up to set up Hutchinson who rifled the ball past Searle from the edge of the area.

Sadler’s men had their tails up and increased the pressure on Forest Green.

Knowles curled a shot over the bar before Stirk’s shot trickled into the gloves of Searle as the hosts searched for a winner.

It was the Saddlers who looked the more likely going into added time. Hutch played in Knowles who burst towards the box and shifted the ball onto his right foot but he fired his shot off target.

In the end, the tie was level after 90+ minutes and both sides then battled it out for another point in the group via the penalty shootout which the visitors went on to win.
