Sadler discusses trip to Barrow

28 November 2023

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is expecting to meet a Barrow side who will be well drilled when his team travel to the Progression Stadium this evening.

The Saddlers will be aiming to get back on track in the league after a run of five matches without a victory.

Sadler is keen to get back to winning ways but is anticipating a tricky assignment against Pete Wild’s high-flyers.

“It’s a tough game, Barrow are doing things really well,” Sadler said.

“They’ve got a good manager who knows how to set his team up so it will be a tough game, of course it will but we, as we always do, we go there trying to win the game.”

Walsall will be without Oisin McEntee this evening who will serve a one-match ban after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season.

Sadler was boosted by the return of Priestley Farquharson on the bench at the weekend and while McEntee will be a miss for the team after a good display at centre-half on Saturday, he is pleased to be seeing players edging closer to returning to the pitch.

“We shifted Oisin to the back-line and he looked really good there,” Sadler commented.

“Priestley was back on the bench so he’s not too far away. We’re starting to get a few of those ones back that we have missed which is really positive and a couple more still to come but we’ll have to readjust without Oisin in the team.”

Saturday’s draw against Forest Green Rovers saw Ronan Maher start his first league game of the campaign for the Saddlers.

Sadler was pleased with how the teenager performed.

“Ronan did really well, especially in the first half,” he said.

“It was always in my mind when you get those first appearances as a young player and there’s a lot of emotional stuff that goes on with the game and I wanted to give him an hour and I thought he did well.

“I fancied us to affect their back line more with our physicality as the game wore on and that was the decision to partner Jamma with Freddie to for a period in the game but I don’t think we quite got up to that in the way that I wanted us to do in that period and I think it was there for us to outmuscle them physically.

"But as I say, it didn’t quite happen for us in those moments but we move on with a point and a clean sheet.

“None of us are satisfied with not winning the game but sometimes you can’t over estimate these points and clean sheets so we move on with that.”
