Pre-match: Daniels excited ahead of international adventure but focused on Harrogate task

10 November 2023

Walsall captain Donervon Daniels discusses his international call up and the prospect of facing Harrogate Town on Saturday afternoon.

Daniels is just one of three Saddlers players who have earned an international call up this month with Brandon Comley (Montserrat) and Liam Gordon (Guyana) also being called up by their nations.

Daniels is excited for the coming week as he prepares to represent Montserrat in the upcoming November international window in what is sure to be a brilliant experience.

“I am really looking forward going back to Montserrat and representing my country and enjoying the experience,” Daniels said.

“It’s something my mum always wanted me to do, and, in a way, I am doing it for her and doing it for my family and I’m just excited.

“I haven’t been back to Montserrat since I left at the age of three, so it’s been a very long time and it’s all going to be a very new experience for me. I’m looking forward to it.

“I think the experience is going to be one that I will treasure forever and one that I would like to continue doing moving forward.”

Harrogate Town visit the Poundland Bescot stadium on Saturday afternoon and they are unbeaten in five away games, but Daniels is confident heading into any game at home.

“It’s going to be a tough game; they have had a good away record of late and they have really good, accomplished players within their squad,” Daniels commented.

“But we are at home, and we are chomping at the bit to be back at home after our away game in the FA Cup.

"We are looking forward to it and have had a good week’s work. It is going to be a challenge that I’m sure all the fans will see the boys are up for.”

Daniels has been a mainstay in the Saddlers backline so far this term and is now regularly playing alongside David Okagbue who he cites as an excellent partner in the centre of defence.

“He is a young, eager, athletic, vocal centre half that I do enjoy playing with. I think he compliments me, and I think since he has come in, he has showcased himself in a really good way,” Daniels continued.

“He is tall, rangy, he is good on the ball, really fast and I think our partnership in this present moment and hopefully moving forward will benefit the team and hopefully we have clean sheets to back that up.”
