Danny Johnson delighted to hit double figures and recent upturn in form

11 October 2022

Danny Johnson expressed his pride in Walsall’s recent turnaround in form as well as his own goalscoring run, hitting his tenth goal in all competitions having joined on loan from Mansfield Town this summer.

Johnson grabbed the Saddlers’ second when he successfully rounded the keeper and finished coolly in a 3-1 home win against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, to extend their unbeaten run to three games.

The striker felt the late equaliser against Stockport County gave the players a big boost and is pleased with the team’s recent upturn in form.

“It’s been a fantastic week,” said Johnson. “We needed a turnaround and we said after the draw last week, ‘can we go and make it seven points?’ and we’ve gone and got those two wins to make it seven points so it’s a fantastic turnaround from the lads.

“I think getting that last minute goal last week gave us a bit of confidence, we went into the game on Tuesday [against Northampton], and we managed to get the win and I think all the lads are back on it now.”

The 29-year-old forward has started his spell at Walsall in spectacular goal-scoring form and made clear his delight to hit the ground running with his goal tally and the reception he has received from the Poundland Bescot Stadium faithful.

“I’m buzzing,” he commented. “If you look back to my interview when I signed, I said I wanted to come here to play games, score goals, and I’ve justified that and I’ve come and done that, so I’m over the moon.

“When you grow up as a kid you want to play football and I’ve always wanted to score goals and when you hear the fans chant your name it’s brilliant. It’s a good feeling and hopefully I can keep the goals going in for them.”

Johnson will miss next weekend’s clash away to Mansfield Town due to not being able to play against his parent club, but he has full support in his teammates and their ability to perform in his absence.

“Hopefully we get a result,” he said.

“DJT [Douglas James-Taylor] has come in and he has done well in the last two games, so hopefully he can come in and get a goal and whoever starts up top with him. Knowlesy [Tom Knowles] got a goal today, other people have scored some goals, so I’m sure we’ll be fine.”
