Williams reflects on his career after reaching 700 appearances

2 November 2022

As the Saddlers played out a gritty 1-1 draw with Sutton United, veteran striker Andy Williams was gracing the emerald turf for a 700th time.

The milestone is one of many in a career spanning over 18 years at eight different clubs. It came after the attacker came off the bench during a spirited 10-man fight against Sutton.

"It crept up quite quickly to be honest," Williams said.

"I didn't expect to have hit that milestone already. It was an interesting game, but I'm not sure it was one to really mark the occasion. It was nice to come away with a point but it probably wasn't the prettiest of the 700 that's for sure!"

Williams began his career at hometown club Hereford United in 2004 and earned promotion from the National League. He was a star-man during his hometown side's play-off push, an experience that reflected an intriguing personal relationship with the fans.

"It was surreal really," Williams reminisced.

"Especially in the play-off semi-final win when there was a pitch invasion. I knew half the people that were on the pitch and I probably went to school with the majority of them and some were my best mates jumping on me, it was a really special moment.

"You walk around the city and kind of know everyone and it is a nice feeling to know the people watching you have known you for years. It's the people that make the game for me."

Williams' career has been well decorated with promotions too. The striker has twice had the chance to play at Wembley, and says it provides both the fondest memories and lowest moment in two opposing playoff experiences.

"The first time I went to Wembley there were probably about 60,000 people there," Williams remembered,

"Swindon vs Preston was a surreal experience for someone who has played at the same level I have played for most of my career, it's probably the biggest attendance I've played in front of but unfortunately on that day it didn't go our way.

"But to then get the chance to go back there with Northampton and to score a goal at Wembley, although the game was already won at that point, was a great memory, with no fans there during COVID, especially as my previous appearance had been the opposite result for me; so I've experienced a drubbing and a great win at Wembley."

Williams joined the Saddlers in the summer after two years with Cheltenham Town and despite being in the professional game for over 18 years, he's eager to reach the next milestone in a Walsall shirt.

"Definitely (I want to make it to 800), but I think for me I've always focused on the goals," he commented.

"I've got aspirations to hit goal figures, I'm always hungry to keep playing and if ever that hunger disappears that's when you won't see me out there on the pitch anymore, but I've still got goals I want to hit, and anyone who has seen me pre-season knows I'm more than fit enough to do it, and my first aim now is to prove myself to the Walsall fans.

"I'm sure some will have seen what I can do during pre-season or when I've played against Walsall previously. But it'll be nicer to do it in front of the home fans and that's what I'm aiming to do next."
