Williams pleased to be back on the scoresheet

30 November 2022

Walsall striker Andy Williams was pleased to get back on the scoresheet and is keen to keep building and showing his leadership qualities.

The 36-year-old scored his second goal for the Saddlers to equalise in the dramatic Emirates FA Cup victory over Carlisle United at the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday.

Williams was delighted to help the team come from behind to win and to be rewarded for his persistence in capitalising on Carlisle goalkeeper Tomas Holy’s misjudgement.

"I chased a long ball from Manny (Monthé) and their 'keeper thankfully made a mistake,” Williams said.

“I think I needed something like that to be honest and then thought I'd keep everyone on their toes and take an eternity to put it in the net.

“I just wanted it to settle down to be honest, it's been so long since I scored, I wanted to make sure it went in the net and it did in the end.

"I could hear their player near me at the end and I was hoping for a bit more freedom to just slot it in but it was nice to get on the scoresheet again and even better to go on and win the game.

"It was great to turn the tie around. I don't think we deserved to be behind but it was a very tight, close game and it was nice to fall on the right side of another win and get in the hat for the third round.”

Fellow striker Douglas James-Taylor scored his first professional goal to win it for the Saddlers on Saturday.

Williams has mentored the 21-year-old forward at times this season and he’s noticed the good progress he has made and was impressed with his finish.

"Douglas took his goal brilliantly,” Williams commented.

“The pressure was on late on in the game to be slot through and he put it away really nicely for his first professional goal and we've all congratulated him because he's deserved it as he's been working really hard at his game and hopefully, he can drive on from that.

"I like to lead by example sometimes and in recent years I've reached out more to help lads and certainly earlier on in the season Dougie and I had a chat about certain things.

“He's got his head screwed on and I think he's going in the right direction and hopefully we can both kick on, build our confidence and get some more goals to help the team.”
