Walsall midfielder Jack Earing is keen to help the team progress in the Papa John’s Trophy and is pleased to make a swift return to action this evening.
The Saddlers kick-off their Papa John’s Trophy campaign against West Ham United Under 21s at the Poundland Bescot Stadium tonight (7pm kick-off).
Earing is aiming to bounce back from the frustrating defeat to Grimsby Town at the weekend but is aware of the tricky challenge the young West Ham side will provide.
“They’re never easy games,” insists Earing.
“They’ll be coming here to prove something but we know that as a group so we’ll work hard and know what they’re about. At the end of the day, it’s about us and we want to win and progress in the competition.
“It’s great to have a game so close to put things right from Saturday. We want to win every game so hopefully we get a win on Tuesday, put Saturday’s game behind us and then play well on Saturday (against Bradford City) and hopefully get three points.”
Earing made his first league start of the season against the Mariners on the weekend following a good performance against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup last week.
The 23-year-old has had a frustrating start to the 2022/23 campaign after he suffered an injury at the beginning of pre-season.
He’s pleased to be back fit and is hoping to continue getting stronger after getting back in the side.
“It’s what I’ve been working for, to get back in the team,” he said.
“It’s been a frustrating pre-season and start of the season for me because it’s not where I’ve wanted to be, I’ve been in the gym working with the physios getting back to full fitness.
“It was nice to get out there on Tuesday and on Saturday but it’s a bittersweet feeling with the loss. Hopefully I get stronger with my fitness and I keep playing.”
