Match Report: Walsall 0-2 Leyton Orient

2 April 2022

The Saddlers suffered their first defeat at home in five games as two first half goals from Leyton Orient were enough to secure the London outfit the victory.

It took Orient just nine minutes to open the scoring as Otis Khan chipped the ball into the box and Harry Smith got ahead of Rollin Menayese and his poked effort flew into the far corner past Carl Rushworth.

Just six minutes later and the visitors doubled their lead. A smart free-kick routine was worked to the edge of the box where Khan struck it first time and his effort wrong-footed Rushworth following a hefty deflection.

Shortly before the half time whistle blew, Richie Wellens’ side nearly added a third as Ruel Sotiriou judged the bounce of the ball well and got a toe to it as it zipped up off the surface but Rushworth was on hand to make a good save with his left knee.

Into the second half and Orient again went in search of adding a third goal early on and it was Sotiriou who went close seven minutes after the restart but his first time volley was just wide of the far post.

Moments after that chance for Sotiriou, Devante Rodney had a half chance for the Saddlers as Manny Monthe clipped the ball into the striker who controlled the ball well but on the turn his curling effort went just over the bar.

Two minutes before the hour mark, the Saddlers went close again as Jack Earing set Emmanuel Osadebe away down the right and he cut in, firing towards the near post but Lawrence Vigouroux made a fine save to push the ball behind.

The Saddlers went closest before the full time whistle was blown as a clear cross only went as far as Joss Labadie on the edge of the area but his bouncing volley went the wrong side of the post and that was the end of the action at the Banks’s Stadium.
