Roberts excited ahead of new season

27 July 2018

Goalkeeper Liam Roberts says the group of players that manager Dean Keates has at his disposal are feeling excited heading into the new League One season.

With the upcoming campaign just a week away, the 23-year-old is in optimistic mood ahead of the Saddlers' first game against Plymouth Argyle.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's final pre-season friendly at Cheltenham Town, Roberts said: “The Ajax game was a big boost for us and we can take that performance into the game against Cheltenham on Saturday.

“Things are very positive for us at the football club at the moment and we are now looking to move forward.

“We are now focusing on things ahead of the season and we want to keep moving forward.

“It was unbelievable to beat a team like Ajax, they’re former European Champions! The team put in a great performance and it was a great confidence booster.

“We had three games in five or six days last week so it was tough for us but we have just got to deal with that because that is just part of pre-season.

“In the pre-season games you are always looking to impress the management and the staff to try and get yourself into the team for the first game of the season.

“Pre-season training is tough but it’s enjoyable when you get into it and at the end of the day the ultimate goal is Plymouth at home on the opening day.

“We are getting more and more confident now that we have played a few games and the manager is now able to implement the style of play that he wants from us next season.

"We’re excited to get going this season.”
