O'DRISCOLL: WE MUST GET EVEN BETTER

21 January 2016

The Saddlers are second in League One...

Head coach Sean O’Driscoll insists we must keep improving if we are to win automatic promotion from League One.

Walsall are second in the division, two points behind leaders Burton, having accumulated an impressive 52 points from 26 matches.

But O’Driscoll believes we must get even better if we are to remain in the top two.

“In football, you never look back,” said, the 58-year-old, who has won five of his first seven games at the helm.

“Our results in the second half of the season have to be better than the first half.

“We’ve got to be aware that doing what we’ve always done might not get us over the line.

“We’re still in the same situation of trying to understand the intangibles that have made the club successful this season.

“Some of them we’ve identified and we’re careful not to upset them. Others, we’re not quite sure of.

“So we’ve got to be careful that we change the things that can improve us and maintain the things that have got us to where we are now.”

Walsall are back at the Banks’s for the first time in three weeks this Saturday, with Neil McDonald’s Blackpool our visitors.

The Seasiders have struggled this term but moved out of the relegation zone after thrashing Scunthorpe 5-0 last weekend.

“The results show that they’ve finally got something that is settled, or a way of doing things that suits them," said O'Driscoll.

“They’re a team in transition, having brought quite a few players in and mixed things around.

“They were excellent against Scunthorpe; they played at a really high tempo and never gave them a second to breathe, or an opportunity to get back in the game.

“They scored some really good goals as well.

“I think it’ll be a really high energy game this Saturday, which could suit us.”

O’Driscoll confirmed that right-back Jason Demetriou is suffering from an ongoing knee problem and will be assessed before the game.

Midfielder Isaiah Osbourne (knee) is out.
