Match Report: Walsall 0-0 Stevenage

23 November 2019

Walsall were held to a goalless draw against Stevenage despite a late flurry of chances at the Banks's Stadium.

Stevenage keeper Paul Farman made some fine saves while Danny Guthrie struck the crossbar in added time but the Saddlers had to settle for a point.

Darrell Clarke made three changes to the side that beat Darlington in midweek.

Dan Scarr, Shay Facey and Alfie Bates came into the starting XI with Mat Sadler, Cameron Norman and Gary Little dropped out.

The visitors made a bright start and had a couple of opportunities through Charlie Lakin and Jason Cowley.

Walsall grew into the half and had a decent chance when Gordon did brilliantly to get a cross in that was met by Wes McDonald who fired in a shot that was blocked into the path of Liam Kinsella who also tried his luck but his effort was also blocked.

Neither goalkeeper was troubled in a first half that lacked quality.

Clarke made a double change at half time as he introduced Guthrie and James Hardy in place of Wes McDonald and Liam Kinsella.

The Saddlers improved in the second half and were unlucky not to be in front on 63 minutes when Rory Holden’s header, that looked destined for the top corner, was tipped over by Paul Farman.

Walsall put the pressure on and had further chances through Dan Scarr and substitute Elijah Adebayo but were denied by Farman and good defensive blocks respectively.

Clarke’s team had one scare in the final 10 minutes when Stevenage had two efforts cleared off the line after a moment of bedlam in the Walsall penalty area.

The Saddlers continued to press for the winner though and came agonisingly close when Guthrie struck the crossbar with a lovely free-kick.

Walsall couldn’t find a late winner despite their pressure and the points were shared.
