COOK EYEING VALE REPEAT

5 May 2016

He netted both goals in a 2-0 victory over Vale in December...

Striker Jordan Cook came off the bench to score a match-winning brace when Walsall last played Port Vale back in December.

The 2-0 victory, in Sean O’Driscoll’s first match as head coach, lifted the Saddlers up to second in League One.

Fast forward almost five months and Walsall know an identical result against the Valiants this Sunday – coupled with a 1-0 defeat for Burton at Doncaster – will see us promoted to the Championship.

“I’m hoping for the same again this time around,” said Cook, who has featured regularly as a substitute this term.

“I’ve got some really good memories from the game earlier in the season and it was good for the fans to see us in the top two at Christmas.

“Whether it is one goal or two goals, I’ll take anything if I come on and I obviously want to get a chance to make an impact again.”

Cook revealed the squad are in high spirits heading into Sunday’s potentially pivotal final-day fixture.

“The lads have a good feeling that this will be our year and we’re all looking forward to Sunday,” he added.

“If someone had told us before the season started we’d still have a chance going into the last game, I think everyone - fans, players and management - would have snapped your hands off.

“For us to be in this position is amazing. It’s exciting for everyone involved. To come from being a mid-table side last year to pushing the best teams in this league all the way is great.

"We’ve gone toe-to-toe and we’re still here with a game to go. The most pleasing thing is that even after disappointing results we’ve kept digging in and refused to go away.

“Now we’ve taken it to the last game and I think everybody deserves a massive pat on the back.

“Of course it’s out of our hands but we still have to go out there and do a job and make sure we win by as many goals as we can.”
