Walsall captain Adam Chambers is expecting “a tough game” against League One pace-setters Burton.The Saddlers are in second place, three points behind the Brewers, who they will leapfrog on goal difference with a win.
Burton were crowned League Two champions last term and have made an impressive start to their first-ever season at this level, taking 25 points from a possible 33.
Both sides are unbeaten in their last five matches ahead of tomorrow’s top-of-the-table tussle – and Chambers is anticipating an entertaining affair.
“It’s still early days but both teams have started the season really well,” said the Saddlers skipper.
“We’re in good form so it should make for an entertaining game.
“Sometimes the teams that come up have the momentum from the previous year. There’s an element of that with Burton and they’re high on confidence.
“They’re doing well, playing some good football and winning a lot of games. They’re a hardworking team and they’ll be coming here expecting to win.
“We’ll have to be at it from the start because it’ll be a tough game for us.”
Burton may be in fine form but Walsall are also playing well, having made their their best start to a season - at this level – in 15 years.
“We’ve always known that we’ve got a lot of talent in the squad,” said Chambers.
“Throughout my time here, it’s always been a question of consistency. We’ve always strived for consistency and we work very hard on the training ground.
“This year things seemed to have clicked into place and that’s what has kept us near the top of the table.
“Hopefully we can carry that on for the rest of the season.”
The 34-year-old midfielder has started every game in league and cup, being deployed in front of either a three or four man defence.
“The gaffer has changed formations quite a bit this season,” said Chambers, who is the most experienced member of the Saddlers’ squad.
“For the majority of the season I’ve been sitting in front of a back three or a back four.
“I don’t have any preference to either formation. In a back three, sometimes I’ll drop back into defence if someone has been pulled out of position.
“I’m probably a little bit more withdrawn compared to previous years, but it’s a role I’m enjoying.
“I’m glad I can contribute and help the team.”
