WHITNEY HUNGRY FOR POINTS

23 February 2017

Saddlers travel to Wimbledon this weekend...

Manager Jon Whitney says his Saddlers side have an appetite for victory as they head towards the crucial part of the League One campaign.

We have lost just one of our last eight matches in the league, and Whitney's men will be hoping to continue this rich vein of form away at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The 46-year-old said: “For me it’s key that we’ve got some emotion in the place and we’re all very hungry at the moment to try and get some more points on the board.

“This is the business end of the season now and it’s really great that we are playing for something.

“Each game we play we believe we can win, but we only do that if it’s not just words and we actually go onto the pitch with some energy.

“I think, with the crowd and the energy that we’ve got, we’re a force to be reckoned with at moment.”

Walsall beat the Dons 3-1 at the Banks’s Stadium on the opening day of the season, but Whitney knows his men will have to battle hard to bring the points away from Kingsmeadow.

“We’ve got to match them - we’ve got to expect a bit of a chaotic battle and a scrap”, he added.

“It’ll be uncomfortable for us down there but we went to Scunthorpe in similar conditions and our team can battle if we need to.

“We can fight and scrap with the best of them but we can also play as well so we’ve got really good ingredients moving forward.”

The last-gasp win over Peterborough continued our recent fine run of form, particularly on home soil.

Erhun Oztumer and Kieron Morris both netted in second-half stoppage time to secure all three points.

Whitney said: “It was important we got a performance and a win from that because Peterborough could’ve got a bit of a gap on us.

“It was key that we didn’t allow them to get that. We’ve got momentum still, that’s four home games we’ve won on the bounce, so we take that momentum and confidence into this weekend.

“We need to win every game because they run out quick.”
