SADDLERS SPONSOR CHILDRENS DISABILITY GOLF INITIATIVE

Club pledge support to four special schools in the Walsall area...

TWO special schools from the Walsall area battled it out in a golfing challenge this week, with the support of Walsall Football Club, for a chance to be crowned the end of term challenge winners.

Children from Jane Lane, Mary Elliott, Oakwood and Old Hall special schools receive an hour’s golf coaching a week with Mary Elliott and Jane Lane reaching the tournament finale.

During term times and when the weather permits, the children make the trip to Walsall Golf Club to carry out the different challenges. From chipping and putting to target practice, the sessions provide the children with bags of fun and some light physical exercise thrown in as well.

During the winter months, Dan Higgs, the club professional visits the schools and carries out the coaching in their on-site sports halls and play areas.

Walsall Football Club agreed to sponsor the initiative last year and held a number of fundraising events in support of the scheme. The money raised goes towards the coaching costs, the specialist equipment, prizes and mementos for all the children to take away.

This week saw the finale for the current school year with a tournament between Jane Lane School and Mary Elliott School.

Challenges included: Bullseye, dominoes, finders keepers, tunnel, zone ball and down the middle.

Jane Lane were the victors on the day with a grand total of 136 points, closely followed by Mary Elliott School who ran them all the way.
