Sadler: "There were loads of pleasing things"

8 April 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler was pleased to see Brandon Comley’s performance rewarded with a goal and felt there were a lot of good aspects about his team’s performance in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers.

The Saddlers came from behind thanks to goals from Jamille Matt, Taylor Allen and Comley at Prenton Park and secured back-to-back victories to ensure the team remain in touch with play-off places.

Sadler saw a lot of pleasing things from his team and was happy to see Comley top off another quality performance with his first goal since the opening game of the 2022/23 season.

“It was a great hit by Brandon,” Sadler said.

“You’ve heard me speak about the work that he does sometimes goes unnoticed, it’s brilliant he gets his bit of joy with his goal but I thought his performance was top draw.

“Taylor with his delivery from set plays again showing what an asset and a threat we are from those situations.

“I thought the first goal was quite meaningful because there were moments within the first half where we didn’t make them defend enough.

“We got in to some really good areas, Isaac (Hutchinson) had a good chance, Ryan (Stirk) had a good early chance but we got to some really good areas but didn’t put them on the back foot with a delivery into the box.

“Foulkesy (Joe Foulkes) picks Jamille (Matt) out in the middle of the two centre halves in the middle of the six-yard box perfectly which then sets us up so there were loads of pleasing things about the performance but we have to rest up and go again.”

There were 757 Saddlers fans who travelled to Birkenhead to witness the victory.

Sadler was delighted to reward the fantastic away support, particularly after the disappointing result at MK Dons last time out on the road.

“Incredible numbers once again,” Sadler commented.

“There’s been a few occasions where I’ve been gutted not getting those away points when we’ve had unbelievable support away from home, at home as well but I alluded to it in my press this week that our home form has been really good and I want to give our away following those feelings and another near 800 supporters this week, incredible.

“To send them home happy, they supported us from minute one until the end. They even got my goalie coach doing the (Jurgen) Klopp at the end, which I’ve reprimanded him for but I love it, I absolutely love it and hopefully I get the chance to see him doing that many more times before the end of the season.”
