Smith feels preparation is key ahead of busy Christmas period

20 December 2023

Walsall goalkeeper Jackson Smith feels preparation is key as the Saddlers gear up for the busy festive period.

Mat Sadler’s side head to Accrington Stanley this weekend and it will be the first of four games in the space of just nine days.

The team head into Saturday’s match on the back of three successive victories and Smith is keen to work hard to build on that positive feeling.

“Momentum is massive in football. As long as we get our processes right, which we’re massive on here," he commented.

“If we make sure we get our processes right during the week and prepare right, I’m sure the results will come.”

Smith has now started each of the last four matches after replacing Owen Evans who went off injured during the match at Barrow at the end of November.

Evans was fit enough to return to the squad against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday but was named on the bench with Smith continuing in goal.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers stopper has felt the support of his teammate while he’s been playing and highlighted just how strong a bond everyone in the goalkeeping department has this season.

“The union that we’ve got here is amazing, I’ve haven’t experienced something like it where we’re all this close,” Smith said.

“We’re all professional as well, we all drive each other – Watto (Dan Watson), Myself, Evo and George (Barrett) when he’s with us, we all drive each other so whoever it is who puts the jersey on, we make sure that we’re ready.

“You can see before the game, it doesn’t matter who is playing, the other two get around him and we’re just a really tight nit group and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it.”
