SADDLERS SNAP UP 'KEEPER

20 March 2013

Highly-rated custodian puts pen to paper...

HAVING seen Aaron McCarey recalled from his loan spell by Wolves on Tuesday, The Saddlers have swooped to sign highly-rated Manchester United goalkeeper, Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone, who celebrates his 20th Birthday on Monday, arrives at the club on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The England Under-19 International has progressed well whilst coming through the Old Trafford ranks and has already enjoyed loan spells in League One with Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe United last term.

Tall, athletic and agile, he is starting to make his mark in the United reserves and will use this move as the next phase in his development as he joins a Saddlers’ team that is pushing for a place in the end-of-season shake-up.

“It was unfortunate that Aaron was recalled, but he will be replaced by a very able lad in Sam Johnstone,” said Saddlers’ boss, Dean Smith. “I know that Manchester United have high aspirations for him and he has already had a couple of previous loan spells at this level, so he knows what it’s all about.

“I know a lot about the lad and watched him in action recently. I’ve had some very positive reports on him and am delighted to be able to bring him on board until the end of the season.”

Johnstone will make his debut at Hartlepool on Saturday.
