Kick off your career with a Foundation Apprenticeship

31 May 2024

For over 30 years, we at Walsall FC Foundation, have run a very successful Apprenticeship Programme in its varying guises since 1989.

Over 90% of our staff, including the current Foundation Director who joined the Club in 1994, have progressed through an Apprenticeship programme.

In September 2023 we were happy to appoint another six apprentices to join the Foundation, these new staff members have since had the opportunity work across all four of our departments (Sport, Education, Engagement and Health).

We are pleased to be able to offer a wide range of experience to our apprentices, from P.E delivery within schools to adult based mental health programmes, with much more in between. This helps our coaches to develop into well rounded individuals and discover key areas of personal interest within their professional development.

As well as a full year of practical work experience, our apprentices also study towards a Level 2 Community Activator Coach Standard qualification to further aid their development. All education sessions are delivered by our friends at Sport Structures, who are a multi-award-winning training organisation. Personal tutors are assigned to our apprentices with regular education sessions integrated into the role.

Apprentices also complete their FA Coaching Badges during their time at the Club. The experiences and qualifications gained enable Apprentices to apply for full time jobs with our Foundation or within the Sports Industry. Last year we were pleased to offer positions to three individuals across education and administration based roles.

Beyond this, many staff members who began their journey with us as apprentices have since progressed into officer and manager roles. The potential pathways for progression are always present, and as the Foundation continues to grow, so will the volume of opportunities.

“Through an apprenticeship I got the chance to develop skills that I wouldn’t be able to through school. Before looking into apprenticeships I assumed you wouldn’t really have much opportunity in the role, after physically coming in and speaking to people I realised the role would allow me to do everything a regular job would offer and more” – Billy Cartwright, Premier League Primary Stars Officer

"My apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to gain experience in many different environments and work with people from various backgrounds. It benefited me more than School ever did, I would definitely encourage anyone looking for a career in this area to look into apprenticeships as an option.” – Joe Roberts, Education Manager

This is a great opportunity for those looking for a career in coaching, teaching and beyond to jump into an Apprenticeship with a professional football club. To find out more or to apply please visit the following link -
