Jamille Matt signs new contract with the Saddlers

17 May 2024

Walsall Football Club are pleased to announce that striker Jamille Matt has signed a new one-year contract with the club.

The 34-year-old initially moved to the Poundland Bescot Stadium in January 2023 and has since played 53 times for his hometown club.

Matt has scored some crucial goals for the Saddlers during his time so far in WS1, particularly in the second half of last season where he enjoyed a good run of form.

The striker is a popular figure in the dressing room and will continue to bring a wealth of valuable experience to the side having won the Sky Bet League Two title back in 2022 with Forest Green Rovers as well as reaching the League Two play-off final with Newport County in 2019.

Matt is delighted to have signed fresh terms with the Saddlers and is determined to achieve something special with his hometown club.

“I’m delighted to get it sorted,” said Matt.

“Since the end of the season, I’ve been speaking to the gaffer and it’s the only place I wanted to be, I didn’t want to move on after last season.

“I want to build on last year, the second half especially given how we played. I think there are some good foundations there to kick on and do even better next year.

“I’ve always said that I want to be successful for the club, that’s the reason I signed here.

“I’ve achieved some decent success at this level but it would be the best feeling of all if I can do it with my hometown club so that’s the reason I’m here and the reason I want to keep doing well for the club.

“I’m looking forward to next season now and seeing what we can achieve.”

Head Coach Mat Sadler is delighted to have Matt part of his squad once again next season.

“I’m delighted Jamille continues his journey with us and I think it’s a fantastic start to the additions that we want to make," he said.

“The affect he has in the dressing room, the positive mentality that he pushes across the place coupled with how he can completely dominate defences meant that I wanted to tie him down with us as soon as I could.

“The way he occupies defences, I thought his display against Mansfield was a real turning point in his season and for him in his season with the way he dominated one of the best defences in the division that day showed everyone what Jamille is all about and we can look forward to more of those dominant performances throughout the season.”
