Sadler determined to get back on the front foot against Barrow

11 March 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is keen to move on from Saturday’s defeat away at Forest Green Rovers and is determined to get back on the front foot when the Saddlers take on Barrow at the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Tuesday night.

After being largely in control of the match, Rovers opened the scoring against the run of play through Emmanuel Osadebe before Isaac Hutchinson saw his penalty saved.

It got worse for the visitors when David Okagbue was sent off before Kyle McAllister sealed the victory for the hosts from the penalty spot.

The Saddlers boss believes his players will learn from Saturday’s match and insists they are keen to put it right against Barrow and get back to winning ways quickly.

“We want to put ourselves right back on the front foot again on Tuesday night,” Sadler said.

“We want to put it right, get over the line and we want to be clinical in ways that we weren’t as clinical on Saturday and keep that back door shut.

“I thought there were some fantastic performances throughout the team. I thought Foulkesy (Joe Foulkes) coming on did really well, it’s always difficult to come on. I thought Taylor (Allen) had a great game again and I could probably go through it.

“There were elements of things that could go wrong did in that game. It’s another learning one for us and we have to move on.

“They’re gutted we lost the game and that little run has come to an end and it’s important how we respond now.”

Walsall will be without David Okagbue who will serve a one-match ban after picking up two yellow cards on Saturday.

Tom Knowles and Jamille Matt were also forced off with injuries during the match and Sadler will have to assess their conditions but is focused on ensuring the players recover and get ready for the test of facing the Bluebirds on Tuesday.

“We have to dust ourselves down, we have to recover and get back going again,” Sadler commented.

“There’s a few walking wounded, we’ve got to make sure and see where everyone is at, there will be a few interesting decisions in that back end for Tuesday night but the group we have, I know for certain will want to put things right.”
