Saddlers duo nominated for February awards

4 March 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler and defender Emmanuel Adegboyega have both been nominated for the Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month and Player of the Month awards respectively.

February was a hectic month but the Saddlers made great progress as Sadler guided the team to four wins and two draws from seven outings.

Despite losing key players, such as captain Donervon Daniels and defender Priestley Farquharson to injury earlier in the month, Sadler's men climbed from 16th into the play-off places, culminating in the Head Coach's nomination for the award.

The other three managers nominated are as follows:

Graham Alexander (Bradford City)

Wins over high-flying Wrexham and MK Dons were the highlights as Alexander reversed Bradford’s recent slide to move his team back into play-off contention, collecting 10 points from four games and keeping clean sheets in all of them.

Lee Bell (Crewe Alexandra)

Bell’s tactical nous shone as Crewe picked up 11 points from five unbeaten games to move into the top three. Flexible with his formation, he used his side’s fitness levels to press from the front in vital wins at Stockport and Notts County.

Nigel Clough (Mansfield Town)

With 90 attempts on goal, 28 of them in the 5-1 win over Salford, a 9-2 demolition of Harrogate and 20 goals scored in five games while collecting 12 points, the consistency of Clough’s side deservedly saw them take over top spot in League Two.

Elsewhere, Norwich City loanee Adegboyega has been nominated for the Player of the Month award in recognition for his blistering start to his EFL career.

He scored three goals in his first four outings for the Saddlers, including two winners. He also played his part in keeping two clean sheets in what's been a fantastic start to his Walsall career.

The three other nominees for February's Player of the Month are:

Hakeeb Adelakun (Doncaster Rovers) - attacking midfielder

Having arrived in January, Adelakun has fitted in seamlessly with his new team, scoring three goals in five games, all of them winners. His willingness to run with the ball also brought four fine assists, three of them in the 5-1 win at Grimsby.

Mickey Demetriou (Crewe Alexandra) – central defender

Organiser of a Crewe defence that kept three clean sheets and let in just two goals in five unbeaten games, Demetriou also took over the captaincy, contributed an assist and scored the opening goals in the wins at Stockport and Notts County.

Will Evans (Newport County) - striker

Five goals and two assists in six games for Evans as he broke through the 20-goal mark. Allied to his physicality, hold-up play and poaching ability were an emphatic rising finish at Walsall and a beautifully timed volley against Gillingham.

All winners will be announced on Friday 8th March.
