Pre-match: Sadler looking forward to the challenge of facing in-form Doncaster

1 March 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is looking forward to Saturday’s game in which an in-form Doncaster Rovers visit the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

With the Saddlers looking for a fifth win in a row and the visitors unbeaten in five games themselves, Sadler knows his side must be at their best if they are to come away with the points.

“They have got good players throughout the team. I have played with a couple of them, and I know that there are some really good characters and good people there,” Sadler said.

“In Grant McCann they have an extremely experienced manager who knows his way around the divisions. It’s no surprise that they are doing well.

“We have got to be right on our game, right on it. That is the challenge ahead and it is one we are looking forward to.”

Saturday’s game is once again a school partners fixture which means an additional 1500 fans will be in attendance with Sadler hoping that a packed-out ground can inspire his side to victory.

“It’s amazing. Adam and the commercial team does incredibly well to go into the schools and the work done is the community is so important to us,” Sadler explained.

“We want that link with the local community, and we want to inspire the next generation. I thought it was unbelievable on Tuesday night with 5,000 plus fans from Walsall and not many Accrington fans.

“On Saturday it would be great to have even more, you highlighted the 1500 already but it would be great to have more. That’s what we love, that bond, that togetherness and they are creating an incredible place to go and play at the moment. I’m looking forward to the noise.”

Recently, players in all positions have been chipping in with goals for the Saddlers which pleases Sadler as it shows every player is willing to contribute during important moments.

“I think set plays wise we were a real threat all night in terms of really good delivery, people willing to go and head the ball, people ready for second phases, we were really good in that department and have been throughout the course of the season,” Sadler discussed.

“I think it’s that never say die willingness to do whatever it takes and that’s I think what we showed in abundance on Tuesday night.

“It would have been easy to think it wasn’t our night, but we weren’t to be deterred. Everyone in the stadium gave it that one big push.”
