Pre-match: Jackson Smith insists Saddlers are taking each game as it comes

1 March 2024

Walsall goalkeeper Jackson Smith is looking to continue the Saddlers’ impressive form when Doncaster Rovers visit on Saturday afternoon.

One part of the team that has been pivotal to recent success has been the defensive back three, with Smith enjoying playing behind the young trio of Taylor Allen, David Okagbue and Emmanuel Adegboyega.

“It’s what we do on the training pitch. We’ve been working together for a very long time now, so we’ve all got so much faith in each other’s abilities,” Smith said.

“It doesn’t matter who’s on the pitch, we all know they are going to go on and give 100% to get the team where we want to be.

“Since the three of them have come together, it’s a very new way of playing with each other, but they have been brilliant in front of me. It’s been a brilliant experience playing behind them.”

Although Doncaster are coming into this game unbeaten in five, Smith feels the Saddlers can always be confident heading into any game in front of the home fans.

“We are looking to continue the run; it goes without saying. We are taking every game as it comes, we keep making sure we are getting things right out on the grass, make sure we do the processes right,” Smith explained.

“Come Saturday hopefully the result follows but all I can say is that lets get the same atmosphere that we had on Tuesday night, getting the fans behind us again.

“Words can’t describe how powerful it can be, especially when you are out on the pitch and the ball doesn’t feel like it’s going to go in. If they get behind us like they have been doing it will be an amazing experience again and it will only drive us on.”

So far this season Smith has regularly worked in the community and is delighted that more fans will have the chance to attend the game on Saturday.

“I have been out into the community and have spoken with different people, done a few things and one thing I can say is that this football club plays such a big part in the feeling around Walsall,” Smith discussed.

“Hopefully we can keep delivering a good feeling to the people that do come up and watch us and the fans that put so much into this football club.

“When they do turn up and provide the atmosphere that they do it’s brilliant. I can talk for myself when I run out onto the pitch and get the welcoming I get now, the fans have been brilliant with me.”
