Match Report: Walsall 3-1 Doncaster Rovers

2 March 2024

Walsall stretched their winning run to five as goals from Josh Gordon, Jack Earing and Mo Faal saw off Doncaster Rovers.

J. Gordon’s first half opener was cancelled out by Kyle Hurst early in the second half but the Saddlers regrouped and both Earing and Faal finished following two set pieces.

Mat Sadler named an unchanged team following the victory over Accrington Stanley in the previous outing.

After a quiet opening 15 minutes, it was the Saddlers who had the first clear cut chance of the game and they made it count as the two Gordons combined as Liam won the ball back on the left and crossed for Josh who headed home his first goal since returning to the Saddlers.

A crazy moment in the Doncaster defence almost made it 2-0 on 27 minutes when Tom Anderson headed over his own goalkeeper and looked to be heading in but the defender managed to race back and clear it off the line just in time with Jamille Matt putting him under pressure.

The Saddlers restricted Rovers to very little in the first half but they did come close on a couple of occasions when Harrison Biggins’ header was caught by Jackson Smith before a goalmouth scramble following Anderson’s header was cleared by the hosts.

Emmanuel Adegboyega was searching for his fourth goal in five matches as he went for goal from 20-yards out but his effort whistled past the post on the stroke of half time and the Saddlers went into the interval in front.

Sadler turned to his bench 10 minutes into the second half following a decent start from Doncaster as former Rovers forward Mo Faal replaced J. Gordon.

The Saddlers had a glorious opportunity to double their lead a minute after the change when Isaac Hutchinson burst through and was one on one with Thimothee Lo-Tutala but the goalkeeper came racing off his line and made a good save to deny him.

Walsall were left to regret that missed opportunity as the visitors levelled the match on 62 minutes when Hurst turned in Jamie Sterry’s cross.

The Saddlers responded superbly to Doncaster’s equaliser and regained the lead just five minutes later when Earing rifled the ball home after the ball dropped into his path from a corner.

Walsall made sure of the points with 10 minutes to go when another corner brought a goal as Taylor Allen’s delivery was headed in by Faal.

The Saddlers saw out the remaining minutes to claim all three points and climb up to sixth.
