Mat Sadler excited for season run-in

15 March 2024

Walsall head coach Mat Sadler is looking forward to the back end of the season where games will be coming thick and fast starting with a trip to Colchester United on Saturday.

With nine games left for the remainer of the season, Sadler feels this is going to be a hectic but exciting time for the players and fans alike.

“We go into the Easter period knowing that there will be eight big games left from there until the end of the season. It makes April action packed and exciting as well as there are quite a few home games in that mix,” Sadler said.

“We are really looking forward to that final push if you like but I think it’s important to focus on what a big game Saturday’s is, it’s a hell of a game with a team that are fighting for their lives.

“From now until the end of the season every game means a hell of a lot to everybody so it’s a new challenge, a new experience for the younger guys and it’s one we are really desperate to go at.”

Although Colchester currently sit in the relegation zone of League Two, Sadler senses it will be a tough game due to the need to get points at this part of the season.

“They have very good players and a very good manager, undoubtedly. They have some very good football players at the club, and they will be fighting for each other and fighting for the manager,” Sadler explained.

“In the same way everyone is fighting at this stage of the season. You don’t get many non-games like that, especially with nine games to go.

“We know it’s going to be a really tough game and one we have to be rested up for, we have to be refocused for and we have to be ready for.”

With only a fraction of games left for the season, Sadler is hopeful that injured players can return to the setup, but he is also proud of the players who have been playing in the team recently.

“Yeah, we want to get them back but the guys that are out there are doing brilliantly so yes 100% we look forward to having for me, selection problems, I can’t wait for that,” Sadler discussed.

“The guys that are playing, they are doing a hell of a job, and they keep going out there together, they keep going out there and wanting to prove how good they are and how good they are as a team.

“They’re fighting, they’re scrapping, they are giving absolutely everything they can. We’ve got people that will be coming but we’ve also got guys that are playing currently that are giving absolutely everything for the team, for everybody.”
