Josh Gordon pleased to help the team following first strike since return

5 March 2024

Walsall forward Josh Gordon admitted there was a feeling of relief after he scored his first goal since his return to the Poundland Bescot Stadium but was more pleased to have played his part in helping the team earn a fifth successive victory.

The 29-year-old scored the first in a 3-1 triumph over Doncaster Rovers on Saturday as the Saddlers climbed to sixth in Sky Bet League Two.

While he has had to be patient in waiting for his first goal since rejoining, Gordon has been contributing a lot to the team and has enjoyed being back in WS1 but he admitted not finding then net had been playing on his mind so was pleased to get off the mark.

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t (weigh on my mind) but since I came here, there is something we want to do as a team,” Gordon said.

“I love the lads, I love the staff and as long as I’m on the pitch helping to get three points every week, that’s the main thing. Goals are the cherry on the top so to get that one was a nice feeling.”

The Saddlers are on their best league run since December 2015 and will be aiming to stretch their impressive winning sequence to six league matches when they take on Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

After a jam-packed February, Gordon feels a free week has come at a good time and while the mood around the training ground is very positive heading into the this weekend’s trip to Gloucestershire, the players remain focused and grounded.

“As you can imagine, the lads are buzzing, it’s five wins on the bounce now but we go into every game level headed knowing that we’ve got a task at hand and do it in the most professional way that we can,” he commented.

“We’ll get back on the training ground (this week) and look forward to the next game.

“It’s been nice to have the Saturday-Tuesday because of the momentum but at some point you need to realise we need a bit of a rest so to have this week to get the legs right again and focus on what the next game is going to look like and make sure everyone is ready.”
