Walsall Women left frustrated after draw with Walsall Wood

11 January 2024

Walsall Women extended their unbeaten run to five in the league but were left frustrated after Walsall Wood struck late to snatch a point.

The Saddlers fell behind but turned the game on its head with goals from Mia Fellows and Chloe Astell.

Manager Steve Guest admitted that he was disappointed his side didn’t take all three points but feels they have a good base to kick on from as they enter the business end of the campaign following the Christmas break.

“It’s a good start to the second part of the season with nine games left,” he said.

“Overall, we should have taken three points but football is that kind of game where you think you’ve won a game but you come away with a point rather than three.

“Fair play to Walsall Wood, they battled against us so we’re a little bit disappointed with that.”

While Guest was frustrated to only take a point, he was keen to look at the bigger picture and he is pleased with how the team are progressing compared to the previous campaign.

“We look back at how last season was, some of those games we’d have gone 1-0 down and go on to lose by four, five or six,” he explained.

“We’ve got the characteristics in the squad now and this season, there’s not a game that we’ve not scored in, we’ve always scored even if we’ve lost a game so we’ve always been in games.

“They’ve got a no fear mentality within the squad and they’ve got the passion to go out and play football in the right way.

“We’re five unbeaten in the league now so it’s good where we are as a squad, how we’ve developed and the players that have come in have improved the squad so when better players come in, everybody’s game lifts because everybody wants to be part of that starting XI.”
