Valuable game time helping learning experience for David Okagbue

12 January 2024

Walsall defender David Okagbue has been enjoying his loan spell this season with the Saddlers after making the move in the summer from Stoke City.

At just 19-years-old Okagbue has impressed teammates and coaches alike and has been rewarded with a host of first team opportunities so far this term.

The defender has made a total of 16 appearances in all competitions so far this season for the Saddlers and cites this game time as the main reason for making the move in the first place.

“I have come here to play games and help the team,” Okagbue began. “The past few weeks it has been getting better and playing alongside Priestley (Farquharson) and the Skipper (Donervon Daniels) has helped me massively.

“I am just learning from every game and taking it step by step.”

At the young age of 19, Okagbue has learnt a lot from his teammates and head coach Mat Sadler in his time so far at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

“On the training ground I have been asking a lot of questions about the previous games or a situation in training, but I mean they have helped me a lot with that sort of stuff,” Okagbue explained.

“They help me with stuff off the pitch as well like how to speak to people, what to say at different times of the game and how to encourage everyone.

“How to communicate better from the back. Which I think was a big thing for me coming here, to get better at communicating so I think that is something they have massively helped me with.”

The Saddlers face top of the table Stockport County on Saturday afternoon which will be no easy task, but Okagbue still believes the squad is confident heading into the game.

“After some of the games we have had, the lads beat Stockport before I was here and then the Notts County win and the Wrexham win so I think with the confidence we have at the minute I think we know we can beat anyone,” he continued.

“We can beat anyone on our day if we played the way we did in those games, I think we can beat anyone. I’m looking forward to it, it will be a challenge, but I think one we are definitely ready for.”
