Sadler focused on next task after Stockport set back

15 January 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is keen to focus on the positives as his team turn their attention to this weekend’s clash with Accrington Stanley.

The Saddlers slipped to a 3-1 defeat at league leaders Stockport County on Saturday as their three-match winning sequence came to an end.

Sadler is now focused on the next task and insists he isn’t going to dwell on the set back at Edgeley Park.

“I’m not going to get too carried away with a 3-1 result,” Sadler said.

“What I am going to do is focus on the real positives that I thought were evident in the game, we just fell the other side of a couple of key bits in my opinion but watching the game, it was two really good teams in the division.

“I think we’re a very good team in the division the more we grow with each other and Saturday was a yardstick for where I think we should be, will be and where we’re growing to so it’s a tough result to take but for all of us it’s about not getting too hung up on that, it’s about the next thing we do.

“We’ve got a good week before Accrington and now it’s about not feeling sorry for ourselves that we’ve lost a football match, it’s about challenging ourselves to come out and put that right next weekend.”

While Sadler felt his team missed the chance to really lay down a marker, he still remains upbeat, particularly with the response from the 686 Saddlers fans who travelled and he believes their support and backing will be key to bouncing back.

“We win together and we lose together,” Sadler stated.

“We pick ourselves up together and the supporters started that with how they reacted to us, that helps us with picking it up.

“We are of course disappointed that we’ve lost the game.

“We felt like there’s a missed opportunity to really put a marker down for the next part of the season but we look to do that again and bounce back on Saturday.”
