Match Report: Walsall 1-1 Sutton United

27 January 2024

Walsall were held to a draw after Sutton United came from behind to take a point at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Donervon Daniels opened the scoring with a sublime strike but Craig Eastmond pegged the Saddlers back just five minutes later as both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Mat Sadler made two changes to the team that started against Stockport County in the previous outing.

Owen Evans returned to the starting line-up in place of Jackson Smith while Mo Faal made his Saddlers debut up front in place of the injured Danny Johnson.

The Saddlers opened the scoring after 18 minutes when Liam Gordon found Jack Earing who flicked it to Daniels. The skipper beat his man before he unleashed a rocket into the top corner.

Walsall’s lead didn’t last long though as five minutes later, the ball fell to Eastmond on the edge of the box and his low shot crept into the bottom corner via a deflection.

Both teams had opportunities to get their noses in front following Sutton’s equaliser. Charlie Lakin turned Deon Moore’s cross wide from close range before Tom Knowles’ poked effort was blocked.

Lakin came close as he swerved a shot just wide before the break but the two sides remained level at half time.

Sadler turned to his bench at the interval as he introduced Jamille Matt in place of Douglas James-Taylor.

The Saddlers came close on 53 minutes when Isaac Hutchinson slid the ball down the channel to Earing whose low cross was met by Faal at the near post but the striker turned the ball wide from close range.

Josh Gordon entered the fray on 66 minutes, replacing Faal as Sadler added more fresh legs up top.

The striker almost made a spectacular impact as he tried his luck with a superb overhead kick that was heading towards the top corner but Dean Bouzanis parried it behind.

The game became a little scrappy towards the end as both teams looked to find a late winner but neither could make a breakthrough and the points were shared.
