James-Taylor keen to utilise free week ahead of Accrington test

16 January 2024

Walsall forward Douglas James-Taylor is pleased to have another free week ahead of this weekend’s clash with Accrington Stanley and is taking encouragement as the team aim to improve on Saturday.

The striker netted his third of the campaign to equalise against Stockport County but further goals from Tanto Olaofe and Paddy Madden from the penalty spot saw the league leaders claim all three points.

James-Taylor feels another full week on the training pitch to work hard and gel with the new January arrivals will be beneficial and is going into the week with a positive mindset despite last weekend’s defeat.

“With every game you need to take the positives but also do better, whether we win, lose or draw, and keep pushing for the goal and I know that is what we will do,” he said.

“We’ve got another game on Saturday and a good week to work on the areas that we need to.

“It’s good to have Manny (Adegboyega) and Josh (Gordon) come in and bring a new lease of life to the place, a different energy and a different perspective.

“It will be good for them to have this week for us to understand how they play and for them to understand how we play more.

“When we’ve got a Tuesday/Saturday game, a lot of it is about the recovery and the tactical side of it but this week, the same as the previous week, we can put in the work and really dig deep.”

The former Stoke City forward has scored in back-to-back league matches with his excellent strike at Grimsby preceding his header at Edgeley Park.

James-Taylor praised Goalkeeper Coach Dan Watson for his input in his goal as he got on the end of Tom Knowles’ corner.

“I have to give credit to Watto,” James-Taylor commented.

“He’s our Goalkeeper Coach and he does all our set plays. We talk through it and before the game he said ‘you’re going to score from this, just block your man and occupy that space.’

“It was a good ball from Knowlesy, the keeper couldn’t come out and I made the most of it.”
