Head Coach Mat Sadler admits things didn't quite click against Sutton United

29 January 2024

Head Coach Mat Sadler believes things didn’t completely click for his side during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Sutton United at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The Saddlers opened the scoring after 18 minutes through a superb strike from captain Donervon Daniels but were pegged back just five minutes later when a deflected Craig Eastmond strike got the visitors back on level terms.

Despite having the better of the chances in the game, Sadler’s side couldn’t quite find the second goal in the game to secure all three points on the afternoon.

“It was one of those days where it just didn’t completely click, that’s what I would probably best sum it up as,” said Sadler.

“It looked as though there were maybe a few new relationships with the couple of new players that we have brought in.

“It was great for me to get back out there after no game last weekend, it’s now an important week ahead of learning, of refocusing and getting going again but it was good to get back in front of the home fans.

“We didn’t lose and they say that if you can’t win the game, certainly don’t lose it but that final bit just wasn’t quite there today for us to win the game.”

On Daniels scoring his first ever goal at the Poundland Bescot Stadium, Sadler expressed his delight at him getting himself on the scoresheet.

“I am delighted for Donervon, he is captain fantastic,” Sadler continued.

“He has been unbelievable all season and he will continue to be that in the role that he is playing now.

“I am delighted for him to get on the scoresheet but I am just frustrated for us that it didn’t turn into a victory for us.”
