Farquharson delighted to score first Saddlers goals

3 January 2024

Walsall defender Priestley Farquharson was delighted to score his first Saddlers goal on New Year’s Day.

The 26-year-old scored the fifth of Walsall’s six against the Grimsby Town at Blundell Park as Mat Sadler’s side recorded their third successive victory in some style.

Farquharson revealed that he set himself an ambitious goals target heading in to this campaign. He’s pleased to finally get off the mark, even if it wasn’t the prettiest of goals.

“It wasn’t the best goal but they all count,” he admitted.

“I’m buzzing to get my first goal for the club and hopefully I can get a few more because I set an optimistic goal at the start.

“I had a few injuries that killed me a bit but it’s a step closer so hopefully I can get more but I don’t care if I score or not, as long as we win, that’s the main thing.”

The defender has had a frustrating time at the Poundland Bescot Stadium since signing in the summer as he suffered an injury just four days before the season started. He then had a further setback just four games after his comeback.

After two months on the sidelines, he made his return away at Barrow towards the end of November and since that defeat, the Saddlers have lost just one of their eight matches since and Farquharson is hoping he has now put his injuries woes behind him and is doing all he can ensure he can maintain his form and fitness.

“For me, it’s a lot of maintenance on myself so rubs, nutrition, supplements – everything to make me play and stay on that pitch because I’m sick of being injured and I just want to help the team,” he explained.

“I feel like I’m in a good place right now and I’ve got to thank the gaffer because he’s really helped me with that and helped me progress.

“That’s not just me, it’s everyone doing the same and it shows how good we can be.”
