Sadler ranks Harrogate display as one of the best on the road

26 February 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler ranked Saturday’s victory at Harrogate Town as ‘one of the best’ away performances.

Liam Gordon and Mo Faal, with his first for the club, both got on the scoresheet to help the Saddlers to a 2-0 victory and climb up to ninth in the table.

Sadler was impressed with the performance and while he felt the scoreline could have been more handsome given the chances they had, he was pleased with how the players adapted in the game and produce a really good performance.

“It was definitely solid,” he said.

“I thought the first half was pretty even-stevens, Harrogate sat behind the ball and did what they did when we first played them at home.

“We probably took a little bit of time, they shifted to a 4-3-3 and it took us 20/25 minutes to work that out and once we did at the back end of the first half, last 15 minutes of that, we started to grow into it.

“In the second half when they start to open up a bit, it could have been anything, we had some fantastic chances to completely finish the game.

“I have to be pleased with everything that they did. I want us to be clinical, I want us to finish those ones off but I was delighted for Liam, delighted for Mo to get his goal and I thought the threat our lads posed, not just on the counter attack but in normal play as well, it was absolutely fantastic.

“That has to go down as one of the best away performances."

The Saddlers netted their 50th league goal of the season at the EnviroVent Stadium in what was also their fifth league victory on the road in 2023/24.

Sadler was delighted to be able to reward the travelling fans who backed the team superbly in North Yorkshire.

“646 people travelled a long way and we’re absolutely delighted to give them a performance that they deserved for how they turned up,” he commented.

“They sang throughout the whole game and we got our moments at the end there. It was a proper performance, I really enjoyed that.”
