Saddlers to don green strip at Gillingham to mark Green Football Weekend

2 February 2024

With only days to go until the winner of the Green Football Cup is decided, Walsall’s amazing fans are continuing to score green goals to help the club climb the league and to help protect our world.

Saddlers fans have so far scored 9 goals by taking climate-friendly actions, including taking downloading the Green Football Weekend Veggie Cookbook, trying a veggie meal, leaving the car at home and using reusable bottles. Fans can choose, register and track their goals at www.greenfootballweekend.com.

Walsall’s very own Jamille Matt has contributed their favourite veggie recipe - Caribbean rice & peas - to the Cookbook, which fans can download for free on the Green Football Weekend website.

Last week’s match against Sutton United was our dedicated green football match.

Only re-usable plastics were used in Stadium Suite and the Mick Kearns Community Hub while

We also had a Green Menu in the kiosks which includes Vegan Hotdogs, Vegan Chicken & Mushroom Pies, Vegan Steak Pies and Cheese and Onion Pies.

We will also be marking Green Football Weekend at this weekend’s game against Gillingham by wearing our green strip!

The future of football is at risk due to the effects of climate change, with 150,000 games already cancelled per year due to pitch flooding. By 2050, a quarter of UK football grounds will be flooded, with one in four teams expecting partial or total stadium flooding each year.

But when fans and clubs come together to take action, football has incredible power to help protect our world.  If the UK’s football fans ate one veggie meal a day, it would save as much carbon as taking 5.5 million cars off the road.
